Noah Clothing's membership sustains Atlantic marine biodiversity

Noah Clothing was built on the belief that individuals must engage in the world around them. This led them to connect with a local environmental partner, Coastal Research and Education Society of Long Island, Inc. (CRESLI) as part of their 1% for the Planet commitment. Based out of New York, Noah Clothing and CRESLI see the climate change on Atlantic marine biodiversity firsthand.

The Noah Clothing team was called to take action after seeing an increasing amount of beached whales on the Long Island Coast. To learn more about the issues and find ways to get involved, they headed to Moriches Bay where they met with CRESLI President and mammal biologist Dr. Arthur Kopelman. Dr. Kopelman showed them around the area and shared knowledge from his 35 year career in marine conservation. The team talked about the importance of humpback whale recovery—and how the population is bouncing back after being nearly hunted to extinction.

On average, a single whale stores enough CO2 to cover the emissions of a small country like Bermuda or Belize. This incredible impact happens after a whale’s life when it sinks down to the ocean floor. The journey takes the carbon stored in a whale’s body to the deep sea—where it will stay locked up for centuries. Whales also play a critical role in upholding marine ecosystems, which would result in a notable acceleration of climate change if disrupted.

Noah Clothing’s approach to taking action was twofold: creating a short documentary with Maxwell Henderson on the importance of marine diversity and donating 100% of proceeds from their Whale 5-panel hats to further CRESLI’s mission. The documentary features Dr. Kopelman’s voice and work as he shares the history of whale conservation and how humans can coexist with and protect marine life.

The hat was a major hit for Noah Clothing, selling out within days and raising $9,887 for CRESLI. The donation will go toward continued marine recovery efforts in coastal Long Island—creating a stark and lasting impact.

The green stripe on the pride flag represents nature—and allyship between the LGBTQIA+ community and the planet. Queer communities have historically been at the forefront of environmental justice, yet frequently left out of outdoor adventure and policy decisions. Environmental action is only effective when all voices are heard, included and honored, especially the voices of those most impacted by our changing world. Meet six LGBTQIA+ led 1% for the Planet Environmental Partners advancing justice, outdoor joy and a brighter future.

Feminist Bird Club connects with the feminist and anti-racist movements while addressing intersectional struggles. Using their 5 Principles as a framework, folks at Feminist Bird Club fight for conservation and environmental justice through all their initiatives. Outdoorist Oath

Founded by Pattie Gonia, José González and Teresa Baker, Outdoorist Oath fosters a commitment to action that supports planet, inclusion and adventure. What starts as a two-hour workshop ends with action-based commitment and a framework on how to coexist with the natural world. The Venture Out Project

The Venture Out Project leads backpacking and wilderness trips for LGBTQIA+ people across the United States. With work based in actively building queer and transgender communities outdoors, this environmental partner offers identity-specific overnight and day events, transgender inclusion workshops and more.

OUT for Sustainability

Created by and for LGBTQIA+ communities, OUT for Sustainability (OUT4S) promotes climate resilience and environmental justice. This environmental partner works alongside four sub-missions: representation, participation, redistribution and transformation. OUT4S offers collaborations, workshops, educational resources and training—all to focus on the needs of multiply-marginalized folks who disproportionately experience climate injustice.

Brave Trails

Based in Los Angeles, Brave Trails is the first summer camp and community space for LGBTQIA+ youth. The camp fosters inclusion while helping youth find their people, place and passion. Brave Trails’ work extends beyond camp with mental health services, leadership programs and meet-up groups.

ACTIVIST tells us about the intersection between Manuka honey and 1% for the Planet

ACTIVIST Mānuka works with the planet’s natural resources—not against them. Their commitment to conscious business practices is what inspired their decision to join 1% for the Planet in 2022 as a member in the manuka honey industry.

What inspired ACTIVIST Mānuka to become a 1% for the Planet member?

Our personal interests and lifestyle passions are very much around environmental conservation which is why ACTIVIST came to be. Being involved with 1% for the Planet made sense to be part of this larger vehicle.

Why is it important for businesses to give back?

Gabrielle and I are believers in giving and helping serve others. Getting involved is important not just from a human point of view, but a business point of view. We are lucky to be able to use our business as a vehicle to do so—even though it’s on a small scale. Being a member also celebrates and empowers the people and partners who are out there doing the hard work in terms of their conservation efforts, which we all benefit from as a society.

How do ACTIVIST Mānuka's values drive environmental giving?

At the core of our business and products, we are working prolifically with natural resources—specifically, manuka honey. In essence, we are simply letting Mother Nature, the seasonal cycles, symbiotic relationships and microclimates cultivate the basis of our products. With this mindset, it is simple to invest back into environmental areas we can help protect and nurture.

How has membership impacted your business?

What I like most about membership is that it allows us to link the fundamental aspects of our brand and be involved with something greater. Tangible aspects complete the full manuka honey product cycle in relation to partners we donate to and what they are doing. It's beautiful to know that you're not only benefitting the planet but also the future origin of products and the environment.

How do you see your membership evolving in the future?

Ideally, we would love to participate on a greater scale. We are lucky in the sense we are family owned and self-funded. We don’t have restrictions over the business, so for us, we like the idea of giving more and helping beyond maybe what the bottom line of a business might say to do or not to do. For us, it has to be more than a marketing initiative.

Celebrate Earth Month by learning about our 4 impact areas

Earth Month is a time to appreciate our planet and acknowledge our impact—in all forms—on the environment. According to our environmental partner Earth Day Network, 1 billion people across the globe celebrate Earth Day. With that, April 22 is “the largest secular civic event in the world.”

The climate crisis is complicated, so it can be hard to know where to start. 1% for the Planet addresses four impact areas to simplify—but not exclude—the intersection of environmental awareness and justice.

Rights to nature

Policy and community engagement are at the core of Rights to nature. Ensuring vulnerable and underserved individuals receive land rights, water rights and nature access is key to establishing just societies. Through land management and heritage site protection, local communities are supported and strengthened.

With dedicated workshops, Unconquered and Solar Sister collaborated to create marketing campaigns through the Uncharted Series. Their relationship led to renewable energy initiatives and refining marketing techniques—all while uplifting rights to nature.

Just economies

Like all of our impact areas, the Just economies category is multifaceted. Responsible consumption through resilient agriculture promotes sustainable livelihoods. Decarbonization also plays a role, as just economies require core policy change or flexibility.

Slow Food USA and Davines are working together to create just economies in Italy and the United States. Davines is supporting Italian farmers and their local economy by incorporating ingredients from an Italian Slow Food community. Read the feature blog article to learn more about their partnership.

Conservation and restoration

The Conservation and restoration impact area centers around biodiversity protection. Marine, freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems are preserved through responsible management practices. While including the role of wildlife conservation, this impact area exemplifies the symbiotic nature of the environment.

Moors for the Future and Coldhouse Collective work together to educate the local community on the importance of its carbon storage—conserving and restoring the Peak District National Park uplands. Learn more about their partnership by reading our recent blog piece.

Resilient communities

Environmental partners working in the Resilient communities area advocate for equality and education in communities that are disproportionately impacted by climate change. This impact area also includes advocacy for sustainable cities, environmental education, pollution awareness and adaptive disaster and risk programs.

Aegean Rebreath and APIVITA put meaning behind resilient communities. In 2022, the two organizations held a beach cleanup across five Greek islands: Kea, Mykonos, Alonnisos, Milos and Heraklion of Crete. Together, Aegean Rebreath and APIVITA collected 1.7 tons of ghost nets, 213 tires and mass amounts of general waste and plastic bottles. Mad Agriculture and the grain revival movement

Mad Agriculture and the grain revival movement

1% for the Planet member giving reaches far beyond any dollar amount. Our innovative giving model brings businesses and environmental partners together to take value-aligned action felt for generations to come.

Last year, Mad Agriculture and Ooni Pizza Ovens partnered to advance their shared passion for the ancient grain revival movement, which works to preserve local biodiversity and improve the nutritional value of crops through traditional seed-saving methods—a key pillar of Mad Agriculture’s work.

Ooni Pizza Ovens allocated part of their 1% commitment to supporting Mad Agriculture—supporting their mission to help farmers transition to regenerative agricultural models. What began as a monetary donation led to the improvement of local seed harvesting, farmer networking and education on Colorado’s grain revival movement.

Mad Agriculture used the donation to support their purchase of a small plot combine, a machine that saved valuable time and labor for MASA Seed Foundation. The Boulder-based organization will continue to use the combine to save seeds, upholding their tradition of cultivating heirloom and traditional food plant varieties that are adaptable to climate shifts.

Mad Agriculture also partnered with National Young Farmers Coalition to host an event sharing how plot combines benefit local agriculture systems in Colorado. The success of the event brought the team back to MASA Seed Foundation, where they hosted 75 guests and four local grain-based food brands to highlight the importance of the grain revival movement.

The celebration formed critical and lasting connections between grain farmers, buyers and consumers—partnerships that will ripple outward to increase food sovereignty in surrounding communities.

Access to education is key when it comes to uplifting women’s voices—especially in the environmental space. 1% for the Planet Environmental Partner Global Greengrants Fund reports that less than 1% of global philanthropy is allocated to women-centered environmental organizations. Broadening women’s access to education and amplifying female advocacy around the world is critical to the environmental movement.

Minorities in Shark Science

Minorities in Shark Science encourages women and minorities to contribute their voices and educational experiences to marine science. One of their most impactful programs, Diversifying Ocean Sciences, is a free program for individuals to grow their ocean science knowledge and receive mentorship in a field that is otherwise difficult to enter.

Article Angels, the leading program at Global Choices, harnesses the power of women’s leadership to drive action on the ice crisis. Although their work focuses on the Arctic and Antarctic regions, the organization is made up of women across the globe—from South Africa to Switzerland and the United States. Amplifying Canada's First Nations through film

Untold Storytelling and Water First are partnering with Indigenous Communities to address water rights. The Canadian filmmaking company has supported Water First since 2020 as they work alongside First Nations to alleviate the country’s water crisis.

Marketing efforts are out of reach for many nonprofit organizations. That’s why Untold Storytelling created a film highlighting Water First’s work as part of their 1% for the Planet commitment. The film’s goal was to increase the Water First donor base and build connections with communities across Canada.

The short documentary, Paige, features Paige Manitowabi, a Drinking Water Internship Program graduate. With deep roots within Manitoulin Island of the Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory, Paige is a Water Walker protecting local water resources through a mix of Traditional Knowledge and western science. The film follows Paige as she works in water protection—learning about water science and widening Sault College’s class requirements to include Traditional Knowledge. Now as the Water First Local Coordinator, Paige educates interns on Traditional Knowledge through community engagement and youth education.

Sway is using 1% for the Planet flexible giving model in the seaweed revolution

1% for the Planet Member Sway is using seaweed biotechnology to replace plastic packaging and stimulate regenerative practices where we least expect them. Founded by Julia Marsh and Matt Mayes in 2020, Sway has covered major ground in the past two years—including joining the 1% for the Planet community.

Sway balances market-driven solutions with environmental partnerships. The Oakland-based company begins their design process by connecting with coastal communities who grow and harvest seaweed as a means to overcome overfishing and damaged ecosystems caused by climate change.

By sourcing from regenerative ocean farmers, Sway’s product catalyzes climate-resilient employment, rehabilitates marine life, mitigates climate change and expands the market of their main product feedstock—seaweed.

Sway’s connection with Reef Check is built on the passion for restoring kelp forests. Through community-led science, Reef Check is training volunteers to scuba dive and survey marine ecosystems, focusing on coral reef and kelp forest health. With this partnership, Sway is helping fund the imperative work to uphold thriving kelp forest ecosystems.

Save the Bay

At the local level, Sway partners with Save the Bay, an organization protecting and restoring the San Francisco baylands and wildlife. Through the 1% for the Planet flexible giving model, Sway allocated a portion of their environmental giving towards volunteer time in 2022. The Sway team made a trip to the Bay Area coastline for hands-on restoration work, participating in Save the Bay’s coastal cleanup in celebration of Bay Day.

Fundación Rompientes

Sway’s giving also acts on a global scale. Fundación Rompientes is preserving the Chilean Coastline through conservation policy and local organization. Their partnership exemplifies how symbiotic relationships are formed through 1% for the Planet. Fundación Rompientes advocates for seaweed cultivation with a goal to protect their local economy, while Sway supports their work and learns from their practices.

1% for the Planet rides with the Louisiana Bucket Brigade

1% for the Planet rides with the Louisiana Bucket Brigade

On their team trip to Bulbancha (place of many tongues), presently known as New Orleans, our Environmental Partners team connected with Louisiana Bucket Brigade—a 1% for the Planet Environmental Partner working to end destruction caused by the petrochemical industry.

The team participated in Louisiana Bucket Brigade’s “Down by the River,” an organized bike ride through “Cancer Alley,” a region alongside the Mississippi River containing over 100 refineries and chemical plants. As our Environmental Partners Coordinator said:

"The Louisiana Bucket Brigade is very important, highlighting and educating on the lived experiences of communities of color, especially Black communities, on how the exploitation of our natural landscapes translates into policies of exclusion… Going on this bike tour was a powerful experience, the air itself already indicates the extraction and exploitation of the non-human relatives around, as well as the human relatives who lived and live there. The air felt heavy, and the location not easy to access, which makes it very intentional for us as people not to go ‘out of our way’ to learn about the impact of the petrochemical industry on our bodies, communities and Earth" — Tony Pérez Soto, Environmental Partners Coordinator of 1% for the Planet

Down by the River was created by the founding director of the Louisiana Bucket Brigade, Anne Rolfes, to provide education from the perspective of those that were past enslaved—a stark contrast to the typical tourist-focused plantation narratives centered around the lives of enslavers. Other local "toxic tours," often bus visitors in like safari-goers to gaze upon the polluted landscape, without ever engaging directly with fence line residents or spending any significant time in these communities.

Instead of simply spectating, Down by the River riders will learn how petrochemical plants replaced plantations and hear stories from local residents about the ongoing fight for environmental and racial justice in the area.

A particularly memorable story details the 1811 German Coast Uprising, the largest enslaved rebellion to take place on North American soil. This radical act of resistance parallels the work of local environmental justice activists who continue to stand up to an extractive economy that disproportionately affects Black, Indigenous and working-class people.

While on the ride, our team witnessed a broad juxtaposition: native swamps, wildlife and the vibrancy of Black communities posed against air pollution and threatening petrochemical plants. The subject matter is heavy, but Down by the River centers the radical power of hope and the importance of taking action to create a society free from pollution and racism:

"Grassroots means starting small, starting local, moving from the ground up. But our world is one of interconnectivity and interdependency; the local stretches to the global, and both impact one another. A crucial component of grassroots work is building relationships to further a collective cause for the greater good. The Louisiana Bucket Brigade appreciates its partnerships with larger organizations such as 1% for the Planet who share our values and support our mission.
